The handsome young doctor was often on her mind. He had been her knight in shining armor when she had arrived in town some two years ago; and though he might not have a particular regard for Fern more than any of his other patients, he had taken root in her mind as the ideal stallion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Down on her luck, turned out from the house she had been raised in without a coin to spare, Fern had found herself in Misty Hollow, friendless and without resources. On a hot day, dizzy from lack of food and sleep, Fern had stumbled near a fountain in the park and lost consciousness after sustaining a bump to the head. It had been just happenstance that Dr. Collins was out for a walk and came across the mare, taking charge of the situation and seeing to her recovery at the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Fern had been recuperating in a hospital bed and worrying about how she would pay the inevitable bills, one of her nurses had taken her situation to heart, and arranged an interview with the administration office; and subsequently Fern started working in the hospital that she had first come to as a patient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fern\u2019s admiration of Dr. Collins was mostly from afar. They did acknowledge each other when they passed in the hall, but Fern hadn\u2019t the courage to take it beyond that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The secretaries and nurses <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gossip occasionally, and it had not taken Fern long to learn that Dr. Collins had already found the love of his life\u2026 that was no longer the case, however, as the mare had recently broken things off with him. Hence the sigh from Fern, who was worrying about the doctor\u2019s mental state in this most trying of times. She had seen Dr. Collins\u2019 downcast look when they chanced to meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opinions on the doomed relationship around the office varied. Some said Dr. Collins had put too much confidence in a lukewarm relationship; that Tabby was far too eccentric; that he was better off without her. A minority predicted that the flighty mare would come running back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fern had early on made the determination that doctors always married other doctors, or at least social equals. This Tabby was unconventional, but she <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an heiress of some sort, according to talk. Dr. Collins wouldn&#8217;t look seriously at a nobody like her, Fern Feather. And heaven help her, but that realization did nothing to take him off Fern\u2019s mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was quiet in the administrative office, with only the clacking of keyboard keys to be heard. Then purposeful hoofsteps sounded, coming in Fern\u2019s direction. Pansy, the department head, addressed the mare at the work station adjoining Fern\u2019s: \u201cAmy, could you run this to Dr. Collins.\u201d Her voice brooked no arguing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUm, sure\u2026\u201d said Fern\u2019s frazzled co-worker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pansy nodded sternly and strode off. Once she was a reasonable distance away, Fern leaned toward Amy. \u201cI can take it; I&#8217;m going that direction,\u201d she offered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWould you?\u201d Amy cast her a grateful look. \u201cI really have to finish these reports by quitting time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s no trouble,\u201d Fern assured her, taking the papers. Then she walked the path down the hallway and around the corner to his office&#8211;a path she had memorized. She stopped a moment to appreciate the brass nameplate outside the office that read <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Tobias Collins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just seeing his name caused Fern\u2019s heart to skip a beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This afternoon, Toby found himself sequestered in his office, staring at a photo of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and torturing himself thinking of what might have been. Would this dull ache in his heart ever go away? It had been forty-two days since his heart had been broken&#8211;a depressing count that he couldn\u2019t stop himself from keeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toby had convinced himself, years ago, that one day he and Tabby would settle down, make a life together, raise a family&#8230; He had survived this long by telling himself that Thomas\u2019 attention span would soon be at its limit; that Tabby\u2019s infatuation with the veterinarian wouldn\u2019t last; and that she would return, humbled and apologetic, when the relationship came to its inevitable conclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Misty Hollow wasn\u2019t a large city (it did boast a university and hospital, but was still small by his metropolitan standards), and Toby saw them together around town; there were even rumors of a deeper commitment swirling; and as the weeks wore on, he realized with a sinking heart that they appeared to be genuinely happy. So Toby had to brace himself for the eventuality that he and Tabby would never be together, no matter how much hope he held out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turned out that, on the fateful night of the broken engagement, one of the nurses had been outside walking her dog in the neighborhood, and had overheard every bit of Toby\u2019s dismissal by Tabby. From there, the news had easily spread through the hospital, and then to the town at large. Toby had had countless sympathetic glances cast his way from the staff; and he was seeing so many patients with inconsequential complaints that he swore they were just making excuses to see him to observe how he was bearing up. It was the curiosity of a close-knit community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a knock at his door, and Toby reluctantly came out of his thoughts. \u201cCome in,\u201d he said, rather shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDr. Collins,\u201d Fern said shyly, entering the office. \u201cPansy sent this Very Important Form.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, that&#8217;s fine,\u201d Dr. Collins said in a preoccupied tone. \u201cYou can just leave it there in the basket.\u201d He gestured, but did not look up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course.\u201d Fern set the paper in place and was arrested by the sight of him studying a photo of his lost love. It would take him time to recover, and her heart went out to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noticing her continued presence, though, Dr. Collins lifted his head. \u201cIs there anything else?\u201d he asked with a barely concealed impatient sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cN-No,\u201d Fern stuttered, backing up to the door. \u201cI&#8217;m sorry for bothering you.\u201d Oh, if only she better understood the art of flirtation, and knew what to say in a situation like this that would make him look at her with a modicum of interest!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve had more sympathy than I can handle,\u201d Dr. Collins mumbled, then shook his head as if clearing his mind. \u201cI&#8217;m sorry, I shouldn&#8217;t have snapped at you,\u201d he said, with the grace to look abashed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s fine,\u201d Fern said quietly with a small smile. \u201cI&#8217;m sure you have much more serious things on your mind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not an excuse, though,\u201d Dr. Collins said, running a hoof distractedly through his mane, creating a delightfully disheveled look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes it helps to talk, though. No sympathy,\u201d Fern clarified, \u201cjust an ear to listen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, it\u2019s not worth your time,\u201d the doctor said with a wry smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fern\u2019s hoof began to turn the doorknob, but then she had a thought. \u201cIt is time for a coffee break, though, isn&#8217;t it?\u201d she asked, which was about the boldest thing she had ever said to a stallion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Collins glanced at the clock. \u201cSure,\u201d he agreed, to Fern\u2019s great surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They walked silently to the lounge, Fern simply soaking up the joy of being in his company. Dr. Collins collected a cup for each of them and they settled at a small table, enjoying a companionable silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFern, have you ever had someone,\u201d the doctor spoke-up at length, \u201csomeone you had all your hopes and dreams wrapped up in, and suddenly found yourself bereft?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI suppose when my grandmother, who raised me, died,\u201d Fern said automatically without thinking, her hoof going to the filigree heart necklace she always wore in remembrance. She immediately chastised herself&#8211;he didn\u2019t care about her tragedies! Regardless of what he said, he needed sympathy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m so sorry,\u201d Dr. Collins said, looking taken aback. \u201cI forgot. That was shortly before you came to Misty Hollow, wasn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, and you found me at the fountain,\u201d Fern said with a warm smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember,\u201d Dr. Collins said reflectively. \u201cYou were a scraggly waif. I\u2019m sorry, I mean no disrespect, but you were\u2026 down on your luck,\u201d he observed. \u201cYou\u2019ve come a long way since then.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIndeed,\u201d Fern said, with a spark of spirit warming her tone. \u201cI had just left the house I was raised in, turned out by my uncle who had inherited my grandmother&#8217;s entire estate. I was on the streets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Collins set down his cup, looking stricken. \u201cThat&#8217;s terrible! Didn&#8217;t your grandmother make provisions for you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m sure she said so&#8211;I would assume&#8211;but that&#8217;s not what the will said,\u201d Fern said, shaking her head sadly. \u201cI was sent on my way without a penny. I still don&#8217;t understand it myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, if you are trying to show me how serious my problems rank in the grand scheme of things&#8211;it&#8217;s working,\u201d Dr. Collins said ruefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, no, I don\u2019t mean to diminish your experience,\u201d Fern said, blushing. She was making a mull of this. \u201cI know you have a different kind of relationship on your mind&#8211;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHello, Dr. Collins,\u201d said a haughty voice, a striking white pegasus mare inserting herself into their t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate. Dr. Collins\u2019 attention immediately turned to the newcomer, and Fern felt that she had been effectively eclipsed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athena was at the hospital regarding fundraising efforts for the new maternity ward. Passing by a lounge area, she spotted a familiar purple stallion with yellow mane and tail. It was Dr. Collins, who was a familiar face but who had always remained aloof from her. They lived across the street from each other in an upscale subdivision on the edge of town. Athena had cast countless lures in his direction over the years, but she had always been rebuffed, a slight that she thought about more than she cared to admit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor did cut a fine figure, and it would be a shame to leave him adrift to get caught up in who-knows-what refuse&#8211;like that little hussy shamelessly flirting with him over coffee. He needed to be protected from social climbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHello, Dr. Collins,\u201d Athena said breezily, inserting herself into their midst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh. Ms. Ainsworth. Hello,\u201d he said politely, turning in her direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019ve been making yourself scarce,\u201d Athena said chidingly, blocking the mare\u2019s view of the doctor. \u201cYou must stop hiding yourself away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany things at the hospital require my attention,\u201d Dr. Collins confessed. \u201cEr&#8211;may I introduce Fern, one of our most competent secretaries.\u201d He gestured behind Athena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOffice manager,\u201d Fern corrected with a cool incline of her head, rather amusingly trying to emulate Athena\u2019s haughty attitude, thought the white pegasus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHello, dear,\u201d Athena acknowledged the petite green mare with the barest hint of a smile. It was how she had been trained from birth to treat her social inferiors. \u201cWhat are you doing tonight?\u201d she asked, turning her attention back to the doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8211;\u201d Dr. Collins started to say, but Athena promptly cut him off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re joining me for dinner,\u201d she stated, and held out a hoof to forestall an argument. \u201cNo, no, I won\u2019t take no for an answer,\u201d she insisted. \u201cYou are wallowing, and I&#8217;m here to save you from yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s really not necessary,\u201d Dr. Collins protested.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Athena said firmly. \u201cAnd what\u2019s more, I\u2019m on my way to a meeting with Sandy about the maternity ward fundraiser, and I need your input. I\u2019m sure you would oblige me by coming along.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was nice talking to you, Fern,\u201d Dr. Collins said, apologetically, it seemed&#8211;as if he owed her anything! Athena saw the mare\u2019s face fall. Well, she had to learn. The wisp of a creature was less of a mare and more of a filly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m afraid I won\u2019t be very good company,\u201d Dr. Collins said as they strolled away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, that\u2019s my point; you need some pleasant conversation to get you out of this surly mood.\u201d Athena cast him a coy glance. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve been told that I\u2019m a very pleasant conversationalist.\u201d She knew that Dr. Collins would do whatever she wanted; she was the mayor\u2019s daughter, after all. Now that Tabby was out of the picture, there was nothing to thwart Athena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fern watched the pair disappear down the hall, feeling a tightness in her chest. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He doesn&#8217;t need or want you<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she berated herself, feeling foolish for thinking she was forming a rapport with the doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn&#8217;t a conscious sense of snobbery on Dr. Collins\u2019 part, and Fern didn\u2019t hold the slight against him; it was just part of his upbringing. That sort simply gravitated towards each other. It was easy, natural, the way it should be. Fern was accustomed to being treated as an insignificant nobody. That&#8217;s what she was, after all. She needed to remember that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a heartfelt sigh, she returned to her desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athena <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> skilled at conversation that didn\u2019t smack of sympathy&#8211;Toby gave her that much. She talked of local events and global happenings, revealing herself to be confident and well-informed. And it did succeed in distracting him from his depression for a longer period of time than he thought possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athena was a neighbor and they met regularly on the street or in the halls of the hospital, but Toby realized he really didn\u2019t know much about her or her family, other than that her mother was the mayor of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour mother\u2019s doing a good job on the, uh\u2026 park committee,\u201d Toby said, somewhat lamely, during an opening in the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes,\u201d Athena said, smiling coolly. \u201cNo one can fault Mother\u2019s efficiency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you have any siblings?\u201d Toby queried.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have an older brother, Adonis; he works as a model out of Cicean Hills and doesn\u2019t have much time for us,\u201d Athena said stiffly, and Toby suspected she was hiding hurt under a mask of coolness. \u201cWhat about you?\u201d she turned the subject. \u201cYour family is in New Pony, correct?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy parents live in New Pony,\u201d Toby agreed, \u201cand my little sister lives with them while getting her master\u2019s in sociology. My elder brother is a physician in Grayton.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWere you close?\u201d Athena asked, toying with her fork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toby considered the question. \u201cI suppose, as much as siblings are\u2026 we had our spats; but, yes, I suppose we were close.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re lucky,\u201d Athena said with a little sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toby suddenly felt bad for treating her with indifference all these years; he had recognized her advances, and had not wanted to give her the wrong idea. But an image now started to emerge of Athena as a poor little rich filly in desperate need of a friend, without a warm family to act as a safety net.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s go to the SSSS,\u201d he said at the conclusion of the meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athena raised her brow. \u201cAre you sure? I mean, if you were to run into a certain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who frequents there\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat do I care about her,\u201d Toby said with a brittle smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fern had buried herself in work, and now was eating a late supper of an egg salad sandwich in the hospital cafeteria. She stared off into space as she chewed thoughtfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhoever he is,\u201d a voice interrupted her thoughts, \u201che\u2019s not worth putting yourself through this grief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh!\u201d Fern looked up in surprise at the red mare standing before her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m Garnet,\u201d the mare said, seating herself across from Fern. \u201cIt looks like you need someone to talk to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m fine, really,\u201d Fern insisted. \u201cBut I\u2019m Fern. It\u2019s nice to meet you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe lovelorn sighs, hopeless expression\u2026\u201d Garnet tore open a bag of candy and popped a chocolate into her mouth. \u201cYou\u2019ve got it bad for someone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a little mopey,\u201d Fern admitted. \u201cBut you must have your own things to worry about, worse than me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m just visiting a friend with appendicitis. No big deal.\u201d Garnet shrugged. \u201cSo, who\u2019s the stallion?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell\u2026\u201d Fern hesitated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s a gorgeous doctor, isn\u2019t he?\u201d Garnet leaned over, eyes twinkling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes,\u201d whispered Fern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garnet nodded. \u201cAnd you\u2019re beneath his notice as support staff.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething like that,\u201d Fern agreed, still reluctant to share details with this friendly stranger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoctors aren\u2019t all they\u2019re cracked up to be,\u201d Garnet said, waving her hoof dismissively. \u201cAlways on call, completely unreliable. You\u2019re not missing much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou sound like you\u2019ve had experience.\u201d Fern looked at her curiously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy sister dated one,\u201d Garnet said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re probably right.\u201d Fern sighed. \u201cI just can\u2019t get him off my mind, you know? Earlier we were having coffee&#8211;\u201d Here, her reserve began to break down. \u201c&#8211;and it felt like something clicked. Then&#8211;just my luck&#8211;the mayor\u2019s daughter came along, and just like that, I was invisible!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLocal dignitaries are the worst!\u201d scoffed Garnet. \u201cThey think they\u2019re all that, you know? But who really cares?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know! She acted like she owned the place\u2026 and Dr. Collins!\u201d Fern hadn\u2019t intended to disclose something as specific as a name, but it tumbled out regardless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHey, some friends and I are meeting at the bowling alley tonight. You should stop by,\u201d Garnet urged. \u201cGet your mind off gorgeous doctors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, um, well,\u201d Fern said, flustered. She didn\u2019t go out much, as that cost money and she wanted to save up to hire a lawyer to look into her grandmother\u2019s will. But she <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feeling down, and maybe some self-care was in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019ll be fun!\u201d Garnet assured her. \u201cTrust me!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;Tabby and Thomas&#8211;were there at the ice cream shop, too; and Toby was glad for Athena\u2019s presence. She was a shield of sorts, showing that Toby wasn&#8217;t locked away pining for Tabby (which was closer to the truth, but not necessarily something he wanted to admit to). It was easier on his pride to show a brave face when confronted with their happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAm I supposed to eat this with my hooves?\u201d Athena said disparagingly, regarding her lemon sorbet with no utensil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll get you a spoon,\u201d Toby said with alacrity, leaping to his hooves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Toby was walking back to the table from his errand, his gaze met Tabby\u2019s across the room. He looked at her with what he hoped was cool indifference, and she quickly glanced away, whispering something to her sweetheart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toby knew he would always love her; no matter what happened down the line, she would always hold a piece of his heart. But he returned to Athena, and was able to maintain his good humor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy father expects me to be at his golf tournament this weekend,\u201d Athena said coyly once they were settled. \u201cI\u2019m sure it will be tedious and dull, but\u2026 would you like to accompany me?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d be delighted,\u201d said Toby promptly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athena smiled. Toby was able to respond in kind, and mean it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thought of the other mare, who had artlessly shared her life story with him only a matter of hours ago, was forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTomorrow makes one year since you came traipsing into my office for an interview,\u201d Thomas said, regarding his companion fondly on their walk from the ice cream shop. \u201cAre you sure we can&#8217;t tell anyone about the engagement yet?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStraw&#8217;s so excited about Vanguard&#8217;s proposal,\u201d Tabby protested. Indeed, Strawberry was full to bursting over the Christmas engagement, wearing her ring with great pride, and already planning for the June wedding. \u201cI don&#8217;t want to steal her thunder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut then you&#8217;ll never have the spotlight yourself,\u201d Thomas pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don&#8217;t care about that sort of thing,\u201d Tabby said. \u201cI worked everything out with Tiny, and the date&#8217;s set. I just think that the less advance notice, the better. Ponies tend to lose their heads over wedding planning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat doesn&#8217;t mean we couldn&#8217;t tell them we&#8217;re engaged,\u201d Thomas said, a bit pleadingly, \u201cand pick out the ring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guiltily, Tabby realized that the formalities <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matter to him. \u201cSoon,\u201d she said, drawing closer to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fern hadn\u2019t cultivated any friendships outside of the workplace, and she looked forward to this novel event. She hadn\u2019t realized she had missed this sort of thing; though not in the popular crowd by any means through her formative years, she had been included in various get-togethers during her time in school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the bowling alley, she met Garnet\u2019s friends&#8211;siblings Chocolate Chip and Wishbone. They were pleasant company, and set Fern at ease. Brother and sister both attended the local university&#8211;Wishbone being a freshman, and Chocolate Chip graduating the coming year. A good time was had by all, and new friendships formed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only much later, when Fern was alone back at her apartment, that she realized with great dismay that her grandmother\u2019s necklace had gone missing at some point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTroubadour?\u201d Garnet said into her phone, toying with the fancy filigree heart pendant as she reclined on her couch.\u00a0 \u201cYes, I have the necklace.
