Caprice took paths that cut through the back portions of various properties, but she clearly felt at home with the minor trespasses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the two arrived in a grove of oak trees at the back of one of the mansions, Caprice stopped. Under the shelter of one tree stood a large upright stone slab, the sort usually reserved for cemeteries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caprice pointed to the monument. \u201dThere it is,\u201d she said proudly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stone was inscribed with the name <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomas C. Underhoof, Esquire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by the years of his presence in this world. Various decorations were also engraved&#8211;paw prints, mice, fish, a rainbow. A profusion of flowers was planted all around, and various weathered cat toys were placed on the base of the slab. In the stone\u2019s shadow was a stone bench.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a fitting memorial to Mr. Underhoof,\u201d Dietrich said at length, taking in the garish display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caprice beamed. \u201cI knew you would appreciate it.\u201d She sat on the bench and patted the seat next to her. \u201cSit,\u201d she invited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staring into her eyes, Dietrich suddenly felt at a loss for words, and blurted out the first half-formed thought that came to mind: \u201cI have three cats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caprice touched his hoof. \u201cTell me about them,\u201d she said, her eyes lighting with interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, there\u2019s Buddy&#8211;he\u2019s a silver mackerel tabby; he was a stray I found in the alley next to my building.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was so kind of you. I\u2019d expect nothing else,\u201d Caprice said softly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s not as young and spry as he used to be, but he\u2019s doing okay,\u201d Dietrich said a rush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She squeezed his hoof reassuringly. \u201cAnd the others?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDaisy belonged to a work friend whose girlfriend was allergic&#8211;I took her in,\u201d Dietrich explained. \u201cThe cat, not the girlfriend,\u201d he hastily clarified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caprice giggled. \u201cWhat does she look like\u2026 the cat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOrange tiger striped, but with calico patches on her legs and paws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow delightful,\u201d cooed Caprice. \u201cAnd there\u2019s one more?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, Trixie, the youngest. She\u2019s black and white. Runt of the litter from a neighbor\u2019s cat.\u201d This wasn\u2019t the ordinary topic of conversation Dietrich would choose to have with a beautiful mare, but Caprice was far from ordinary and if she wanted to talk about cats, he was loath to dissuade her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny health issues?\u201d she prodded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And thus Dietrich ended up giving her a complete medical history of all of them. He knew he was rambling, but her eyes encouraged him to go on, and so he did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c..the worms cleared up, but then she developed an upper respiratory infection,\u201d Dietrich was finishing Trixie\u2019s analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, that\u2019s a shame.\u201d Caprice was duly sympathetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, but fortunately the antibiotics took care of it in short order.\u201d Realizing that it was perhaps time to steer the conversation elsewhere, Dietrich was emboldened to say, \u201cI hope you can meet them one day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI hope so, too,\u201d Caprice said with a coy smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then he leaned over and kissed her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs it possible to fall in love this quickly?\u201d she asked breathlessly when he released her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes,\u201d he said simply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storen approached the office of Monk Publishing\u2019s CEO. It wasn\u2019t normal working hours, but Cecil Monk was often there after hours. And Storen made a habit of knowing his boss\u2019s habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat do you want, boy?\u201d Cecil, seated behind his mahogany desk, said impatiently, not looking up from the paper in front of him. \u201cMake it quick.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMr. Monk, sir,\u201d said Storen with deep reverence, \u201cas an employee and, if I may be so bold, a friend&#8211;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou may not,\u201d Cecil barked, stamping a paper with a loud thud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course&#8211;very wise, sir&#8211;fraternization is deplorable,\u201d Storen back-pedaled, \u201cbut I feel it incumbent upon myself to report something that I witnessed at the assembly hall earlier.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, well, just spit out what it is you have to say!\u201d Cecil snapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour daughter, sir, was seen in company with Dietrich Fairfax!\u201d Storen revealed. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dancing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with him!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cecil looked up in consternation. \u201cWhat! I thought Reggie had run his boy out of town years ago,\u201d he said, aggrieved. \u201cWell, you sent him packing, I presume?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell\u2026\u201d Storen hesitated. \u201cIt did not seem politic to do so&#8211;he had a look about him&#8211;well, I thought I should let you know,\u201d he ended lamely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat you can do,\u201d Cecil shouted, \u201cis get back there and give the Fairfax colt what-for!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course, sir&#8211;very sensible,\u201d Storen said, bowing his head. \u201cExcept that they&#8217;re no longer there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhere are they?!\u201d Cecil\u2019s voice boomed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTh-they left the hall together,\u201d Storen stammed. \u201cWest down Main Street. I don&#8217;t know where they were going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou simpleton!\u201d Cecil pounded his hoof on the solid wood desktop. \u201cStay!\u201d he barked as Storen turned to go. \u201cYou&#8217;ll need to speak to the police,\u201d he said, picking up the phone receiver. \u201cYou can do that much, at least.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, sir. I&#8217;d be pleased to,\u201d Storen said dutifully, dimly aware that he had once again been found lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caprice leaned back, safe in Dietrich\u2019s embrace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re so lucky to have gotten out of this town,\u201d Caprice sighed, stroking the side of his face. \u201cHere it seems like everything comes down to which family you are on the side of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are poor attitudes wherever you go,\u201d Dietrich said, \u201cbut I admit, there is much greater diversity and exchange of ideas in New Pony than\u2026 here.\u201d He sighed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019ve heard of my family\u2019s feud with the Fairfaxes, I presume?\u201d Caprice said, glancing at him shyly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course,\u201d Dietrich said quietly. \u201cI grew up here, after all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just wonder\u2026\u201d She trailed off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d he asked gently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy father says they\u2019re all rotten to the core,\u201d Caprice prevaricated. \u201cBut\u2026 I don\u2019t think it can be as bad as he says,\u201d she observed after a moment of contemplation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStill, you don\u2019t have any Fairfaxes as friends,\u201d he said, a bit coolly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, no,\u201d Caprice said, scandalized. \u201cFather would never allow it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you blindly follow where your father leads?\u201d he asked wryly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, I\u2026\u201d Caprice hesitated. \u201cI am under his care, you know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re an adult now,\u201d Dietrich reminded her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes&#8211;I suppose so,\u201d Caprice said with some hesitance. She hadn\u2019t gotten used to that concept. Not that there was any way to get away if she wanted to. She had been trained in the keeping of a household, not in supporting herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaprice&#8230;\u201d Dietrich trailed off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes?\u201d she replied, turning her face up to his.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI haven\u2019t been completely forthright with you,\u201d he said with reserve. \u201cI was enjoying our time together and I didn\u2019t want to bring it up, but\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can tell me,\u201d she said in a whisper, steeling her composure while feeling her heart sink. Of course, the little fool that she was&#8211;he must have a mare already that he was committed to!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want you to know,\u201d Dietrich said earnestly, \u201cI&#8217;ve never felt like this about anyone before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat is it?\u201d Caprice asked, feeling her eyes start to well up with tears and cursing herself for her weakness. \u201cThere\u2019s someone else, isn\u2019t there?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat? No!\u201d He appeared offended at the suggestion, and she allowed herself to feel some relief. What else could possibly change her opinion of him? At length, he continued: \u201cI&#8217;m Reginald Fairfax&#8217;s son.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat!\u201d Caprice started in shock. \u201cYou&#8211;you&#8217;re one of them!\u201d She looked at him, wide-eyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere, you see, you do hate us!\u201d Dietrich said bitterly, face clouding over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo&#8211;I didn&#8217;t mean it like that!\u201d she apologized plaintively, reaching out for him. \u201cI was just surprised!\u201d She bit her lip. \u201cThis isn&#8217;t a&#8230; joke, is it?\u201d she asked in a small voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An irreverent snort came from the stallion. \u201cYou&#8217;re just like your father and can&#8217;t help but suspect me of the worst,\u201d he snapped, eyes flashing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, don&#8217;t say that!\u201d Caprice pleaded. Now tears were falling in earnest. \u201cI take it back!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s too late,\u201d Dietrich said stiffly, extricating himself from her grip. \u201cYou gave me your response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow aren&#8217;t you being just as bad yourself?\u201d Caprice argued, standing her ground. \u201cYou won&#8217;t give me the benefit of the doubt, because I&#8217;m one of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those Monks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He suddenly appeared deflated, the fight in him evaporating. \u201cYou&#8217;re&#8230; you&#8217;re right,\u201d he said, sitting back down. &#8220;I like to think I&#8217;ve risen above it, but the early programming&#8230; it doesn\u2019t go away,\u201d he explained, looking at her with pain in his eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI understand,\u201d she said, casting her eyes downward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaprice\u2026\u201d he said, putting his hoof under her chin and drawing her gaze up to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes?\u201d she whispered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love you. I\u2019m not walking away from you,\u201d he murmured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, Dietrich!\u201d she breathed, melting into his embrace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is unconscionable!\u201d Cecil blustered to the police officer that had come to the office to collect a statement from Storen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCompletely beyond the pale,\u201d Storen agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe\u2019s an adult,\u201d said Officer Morris, patiently, as if to a foal, \u201cand she has the right to leave a party with whoever she wishes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDidn\u2019t you hear what I said?\u201d Cecil snapped. \u201cShe was last seen in the company of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fairfax<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA reprehensible thing,\u201d said Storen, shaking his head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAny reason to suspect she was in danger?\u201d Officer Morris asked, raising his eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know they allowed dunces on the force!\u201d Cecil seethed, pounding on his desk. \u201cA Fairfax, I say! A Fairfax!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy grandmother was a Fairfax,\u201d the officer observed wryly. \u201cThat\u2019s not grounds for suspicion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m calling the chief!\u201d Cecil shouted. \u201cHe\u2019ll have your head for this impertinence!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, truly deplorable behavior,\u201d Storen agreed, glowering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStoren, shut up!\u201d Cecil shouted, picking up the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief Meadows sighed as he followed the country club attendant to the reception desk for an urgent call. Who had tracked him down here?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s Cecil Monk, sir, calling for you,\u201d said the mare at the phone, handing him the receiver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meadows exhaled loudly before answering. \u201cCecil, this had better be good!\u201d he barked. \u201cI\u2019m in the middle of a round of golf!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour department is overrun with Fairfax sympathizers!\u201d Cecil raged. \u201cOne of the cads has absconded with my girl. You need to get a team out looking for her!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKidnapping? Someone in the department?\u201d Meadows asked, frowning. He listened to Cecil\u2019s story, the furrow in his brow deepening. \u201cSo you\u2019re telling me that your daughter left a dance with a stallion, of her own free will,\u201d he summarized, incredulous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Fairfax!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Cecil reminded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOkay, Cecil, just simmer down,\u201d Meadows said in a calming tone, tamping down his annoyance at the interruption. \u201cYoung couples leave parties together all the time. It\u2019s no cause for concern.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou fool!\u201d Cecil thundered. \u201cYou will find the Monk Publishing donation to the department greatly diminished this year if you don\u2019t get on this! And another thing, make sure that Officer Morris is properly reprimanded for his impertinence! \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat?\u201d Meadows asked, feigning confusion. \u201cI can\u2019t hear you. What was that? You\u2019re breaking up.\u201d Then he hung up. \u201cIf he calls again, make sure he gets disconnected,\u201d he instructed the desk attendant. \u201cI\u2019m going back to the game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* * *<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCan you believe the chief gave priority to this case?\u201d complained Stonecrop to his partner as they walked down Main Street. \u201cIt\u2019s just because he\u2019s old pals with Cecil Monk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI heard Chief wasn\u2019t going to get involved,\u201d Morris corrected, \u201cbut Cecil got the commissioner on his side. They\u2019re fraternity buddies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, whoever made the call, this is wasting everyone\u2019s time,\u201d Stonecrop complained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI mean, this was bound to happen eventually,\u201d Morris observed. \u201cA Monk and a Fairfax, I mean. They all live in the same town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIsn\u2019t Dietrich your cousin or something?\u201d Stonecrop asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morris shrugged. \u201cSecond cousins once removed. That\u2019s what my aunt says, anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, hey, I think I found Romeo and Juliet,\u201d Stonecrop said, nodding his head to the left. The couple under consideration was framed in the ice cream shop window, looking very companionable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHiding in plain sight,\u201d murmured Morris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUgh, I hate walking in on romantic trysts.\u201d Stonecrop winced. \u201cYou wanna go talk to them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking his head, Morris approached the table. &#8220;Dietrich.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aqua stallion looked at him cautiously. \u201cMorris\u2026 hi.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMs. Monk\u2019s father is looking for her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can tell him,\u201d Caprice interjected, \u201cthat Ms. Monk is an adult and can go where she pleases!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust making sure there\u2019s no trouble,\u201d Stonecrop interjected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is absurd,\u201d Dietrich blustered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not me, it\u2019s the job,\u201d Morris said with a gesture of helplessness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, there\u2019s nothing to see here, so you can run along,\u201d Dietrich dismissed the officers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morris stayed put, his gaze resting on Caprice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be home when I\u2019m ready to be home!\u201d she snapped.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caprice led and Dietrich followed through the streets of Forest Brook, to a neighborhood of mansions with wide sweeping lawns.
